1999

  • Created Environmental Business Initiative
  • Hosted Greening of Industry International Network Conference
  • James Johnson, Jr. wins Faculty Pioneer Award from The Aspen Institute

2000

  • Hosted first annual Sustainable Enterprise Career Fair
  • Created Sustainable Enterprise MBA Concentration

2001

  • Formed Center for Sustainable Enterprise
  • Hosted annual national Net Impact Conference
  • Launched Base of the Pyramid (BOP) Learning Laboratory
  • Launched CSE Mentoring Program

2002

  • Hosted the Sustainable Enterprise Academy
  • Held first annual ”Careers in Sustainability“ Forum

2003

  • Created SE Asia Global Immersion Elective for MBAs

2004

  • Started CSE Consulting Program
  •  Al Segars created a new strategic vision for the Center with a focus on Education, Research and Outreach in the following key programmatic areas: Innovation and Design, Financial/Economic Metrics and Models, Economic Community Development & Base of the Pyramid, and Social Entrepreneurship

  • Hosted Socially Responsible Investing conference for thought leaders, faculty, alumni, students and practitioners in philanthropy and business.

  • Launched BASE (UNC’s Business Accelerator for Sustainable Entrepreneurship), a flagship program of CSE, with the support of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative, the Educational Foundation of America, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation
  • Ranked as one of the top business schools in the world for education in sustainable enterprise (No. 2 rank in for-profit sustainability course content) by the Aspen Institute’s survey, “Beyond Grey Pinstripes”
  •  CSE Director of Research Dr. Carol Hee’s “Environmental Strategy” course was awarded honorable mention in the Dr. Alfred N. and Lynn Manos Page Prize for Sustainability in Business Curricula
  •  Professor Lisa Jones Christensen wins 4th place in the oikos International Case Writing Competition for “Jamii Bora and Kaputei Town: Affordable and Sustainable Housing for Urban Slum Dwellers”

  • Hosted William McDonough, co-author of Cradle to Cradle for a talk attended by over 400 people in person and via the web
  • Over 25 percent of MBA students graduated with a concentration in sustainable enterprise composed of 21 electives

  • During the 2013-2014 academic year, UNC Kenan-Flagler received FOUR top-ten rankings: No. 7 for sustainability (Businessweek), No. 7 Best Green MBA (The Princeton Review), No. 9 for corporate social responsibility and ethics (Financial Times) and No. 9 Top Program for Sustainability (2013-14 Net Impact ‘Business as Unusual’ guide)
  • Co-hosted the first NC Clean Tech Summit
  • Partnered with organizations across UNC to co-host the 2014 UNC Global Sustainability Symposium: The Story of Cities
  • Professor Lisa Jones Christensen’s Sustainability Leadership Capstone course awarded the Academy of Management’s 2014 Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award
