It’s safe to say that you likely want to go back to school to either change or improve your career trajectory. When choosing a school, you will want to investigate the format and success of each school’s Career Management Center to determine the likelihood of your own career success and satisfaction.
When examining programs, be sure to conduct some independent research of each school’s Career Management Center format and approach to helping you in your career. Make sure you feel confident that your target school’s method and resources fit with your intended goals.
UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Career Management Center (CMC) is exceptionally unique in several ways. CMC Director Amy Wittmayer outlined seven factors that set UNC Kenan-Flagler apart as a leader in student job placement and satisfaction. You should ask the following questions when considering a full-time MBA program and its CMC.
Who does the Career Management Center team support?
At UNC Kenan-Flagler, the CMC team is dedicated solely to supporting the full-time MBA students.
When will I begin working with the Career Management Center?
If you are a full-time MBA student attending the pre-MBA summer program called ASW, UNC Kenan-Flagler CMC staff begins working with you on your customized career plan as early as the summer before school starts. If you aren’t enrolled in ASW, the CMC begins working with you the first week of school in August.
Will I be assigned to a CMC point person for guidance?
Each student at UNC Kenan-Flagler works with an assistant director. You have the option of choosing which assistant director you’d like as your advocate. The ADs are functionally aligned at UNC and are accountable for making sure you succeed with your career goals.
Is the person I’ll be working with an expert in the field I want to pursue?
Most assistant directors at UNC Kenan-Flagler are MBAs themselves and come from the industries and functional areas in which they specialize. For example, Mike Schmidt, the AD for marketing and health care students, received his MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler in 2007 and worked for Eli Lilly in a variety of marketing roles before joining the team.
How involved is the Career Management team with employers and on-campus recruiting?
UNC Kenan-Flagler operates on a hybrid model for recruiting. This means that the ADs who work with and advocate for students also maintain an employer portfolio. They keep in close contact with key employers. Given the hybrid model, the ADs understand the roles and companies our students want to work for and frequently conduct outreach to similar employers.
What kinds of additional career prep offerings are available via the CMC?
In addition to the personalized career coaching and one-on-one engagement provided by CMC assistant directors, UNC Kenan-Flagler offers a number of high-level workshops and other programs. These include targeted workshops on how to craft your resume and establish your presence on LinkedIn, as well as specific sessions aimed at improving your interviewing or networking skills.
Will the Career Management team really care about my success?
It is important to know that the person you will be working so closely with from the Career Management Center at your school is truly invested in your well-being and career success. Our associate directors are not only capable, but they also care deeply about your success. You have the ability to select your own AD who will work with you throughout your career search. The ADs track your progress, celebrate your victories and work hard to provide constructive feedback along the way. This personalization and dedication is what separates our team from other top business schools.
