Nearly 60 guests gathered to celebrate the creation of The Rollie Tillman Jr. Development Fund created by alumnus Jeffrey Tucker (MBA ’00) on Oct. 17 at UNC Kenan-Flagler
Tucker is a managing director with Century Bridge Capital, a private equity firm based in Beijing, China, and Dallas, Texas, that focuses exclusively on investments in China. He is also a dedicated volunteer at UNC Kenan-Flagler and has served as chair of the Alumni Council, as a member of the International Board of Advisors and is now a member of the School’s Board of Visitors.
Tucker created the fund – the first of its kind at Carolina – in honor of Dr. Rollie Tillman Jr. (BSBA ’55) to benefit UNC Kenan-Flagler’s fundraising efforts. Specifically, the fund will help the School attract and retain fundraising professionals so that it can continue not only to provide an excellent education to business students but also propel UNC Kenan-Flagler even further.*
Tillman has been deeply committed to UNC since he was an undergraduate student. He has served UNC for many years and in a number of important roles, including general college advisor, director of the MBA Program and founding director of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.
In his role as vice chancellor for university relations, the fundraising arm of the University, Tillman’s innovations were responsible for a major increase in University contributions. In that same innovative spirit, the fund created by Jeff Tucker also will help create major growth in contributions.
“In the wake of the great recession, the state of North Carolina has cut support of higher education,” Dean Doug Shackelford (BSBA ’80) explained. “Those state dollars that we once took for granted are not expected to return. The School must grow its philanthropic base of support In order to continue to provide an excellent education for our students and attract the world’s top business faculty. Jeff’s gift helps meet this critical need.”
Dinner honoring the 1919 Society and Dudley Carroll Society
After the reception, guests moved to the Kenan Center for dinner in celebration of the 1919 Society and Dudley Carroll Society, bringing the members together for the second year to formally recognize their loyal and generous support. Members of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Board of Visitors also attended the event.
Dean Shackelford spoke during the event, telling why the School means so much to him on a personal level – as dean, a faculty member, as an alumnus of the Undergraduate Business Program and as a parent.
“Over the years I have become friends with many of you and look forward to getting to know you all even better,” added Shackelford. “I am really excited about taking UNC Kenan-Flagler to the next level.”
Events like this showcase our donors’ investment in our school. Many of the donors who attended the event also support scholarships and fellowships that enable UNC Kenan-Flagler to attract top students.
